We're not used to seeing buildings covered in row after row of fire escapes. It's almost makes me think of how "braces" on teeth look, but instead it is the buildings covered with symmetrical metal ornamentation. The platforms became an extensions of the apartments they are attached to--like the girl enjoying a smoke break or the family who hung their wash out to dry.
