A Man and His Leg

Today being Sunday, it was appropriate to visit a church cemetery. It was in the Washington Heights area up above Harlem. Trinity Cemetery is located on a plot of land that was formerly the Audubon estate. It is the only active burial ground in Manhattan, but you can only end up there if you have a family plot or are a dignitary. Mayor Ed Koch already has his monument in place there, even tho he is still among the living. The historian who guided us through stopped at various tombs and made history come alive with the stories he told. On of our favorite stops was the Tallman plot where we learned the church records reveal that Mr. Tallman actually used his grave site twice. First thing he burried was his leg - which had been amputated. Then when he died 2 years later, the rest of his body was interred.
